Team Amsterdam

Team Amsterdam focused its presentation on the Bright Zone . a concept that tied together issues of safety, visibility and more space to bicycle in New York City.

Fokko Kuik

An avid cyclist, Fokko Kuik is a Senior Advisor of Strategy & Policy for the Infrastructure, Traffic, and Transport division of the City of Amsterdam. He is also a member of the "Structuurvisie Amsterdam 2040" project team, and has participated in several regional projects exploring public transport in relation to long-term spatial developments. In 2008, Kuik was author and project manager of the report "Metropoolregio Amsterdam: Sustainable, Accessible - A view forward to 2040." Previously, he worked at the National Department of Traffic and Transport. Kuik has a background as a geographic economist, and holds a degree from the University of Amsterdam.

Michael Mandiberg

Michael Mandiberg is a Brooklyn based artist, programmer, designer, educator, and bicyclist, known for selling all of his possessions online on Shop Mandiberg, making perfect copies of copies on AfterSherrieLevine.com, and creating Firefox plugins that highlight the real environmental costs of a global economy on TheRealCosts.com. His current projects include the co-authored groundbreaking Creative Commons licensed textbook Digital Foundations: an Intro to Media Design that teaches Bauhaus visual principles through design software, HowMuchItCosts.us, a car direction site that incorporates the financial and carbon cost of driving, and Bright Bike, a retro-reflective bicycle treehugger.com praised as “obnoxiously bright.” He is a Senior Fellow at Eyebeam, and an Assistant Professor at the College of Staten Island/CUNY.
Shachi Pandey, LEED AP

Shachi Pandey is an Urban Designer and Planner. She received her Master.s degree in City Planning from School of Design, University of Pennsylvania and simultaneously completed a joint program with the Wharton School in Real Estate Development. Ms. Pandey has over four years of international work experience in Urban Design and Planning. Her cross professional training and work experience in both design and economics have given her a unique approach to understanding built environments and urban systems. Her most recent work includes the Cultural District Vision Plan for Baku, Azerbaijan.
Wendy Schipper

Wendy Schipper has worked at the Department of Infrastructure, Traffic and Transportation for the City of Amsterdam since 2000. Currently, she is Project Manager for projects related to sustainable mobility and air quality, including creating and improving bike paths, and creating new Park & Ride and Park& Bike facilities. She is also working on a pilot project which studies the impact that vegetation and different road surfaces have on air quality in one of the busiest streets in Amsterdam. Schipper holds a Master of Science in Human Geography, Planning and Development Studies from the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Carmen Trudell

Carmen Trudell, a licensed architect in both California and New York, is an adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia's GSAPP and an Assistant Professor at New York City College of Technology. She is also a partner in Both Landscape & Architecture, a two-person design firm, and a partner in fluxxlab, an experimental laboratory for innovative energy production. She holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), and a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University.
Stefan Verduin

Stefan Verduin is manager of the Team Tactical Traffic Management of the city of Amsterdam. Prior to this appointment, Verduin was chairman of the Roadwork Committee, which ensures accessibility for cars, public transport and bicycles during road work. He has also held the post of Secretary of the Regional Traffic Safety Committee in the province Noord-Holland, which initiated several educational programs on traffic safety. In addition, Verduin served on the taskforce charged with creating a cycling network for The Hague, and as a Civil Servant for the community of Leidschendam, where he was Project Leader for the planning and the building of cycle-paths.
Claire Weisz

Claire Weisz is a founding partner of WXY Architecture (formerly Weisz + Yoes), a firm known for realizing innovative architecture by means of public and community-initiated commissions, with a commitment to implementing environmentally responsible alternatives. She has been working as an architect and urban designer in New York since 1989 and previous to this in California. Ms. Weisz holds a post-professional Masters degree from Yale University School of Architecture and a professional Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from the University of Toronto. She is the recipient of the Architectural League of New York's Young Architects Award and the Chrysler Innovative Designer Award, among others. She was on the founding board for The Design Trust for Public Space and became its co-executive director. She is a Fellow of the Urban Design Institute and the Urban Design Forum, and is on the faculty of NYU's Wagner School of Public Policy.
